Kyoto is located in a valley in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. The beautiful valley is a part of the Yamashiro (or Kyoto) Basin, in the Tamba highlands. The Yamashiro Basin is surrounded by three mountains: Higashiyama, Kitayama and Nishiyama, it is about 1,000 metres (3,281 ft) above sea level. Kyoto has hot summers and cold winters. Kyoto, the former capital of Japan, has about 1.5 million inhabitants and is the City of Ten Thousand Shrines and temples. It is said that Kyoto its the most beautiful city in Japan.
